The Parathyroid Hormone (PTH), also referred to as ‘parathormone’ or ‘parathyrin’ is a peptide hormone secreted by the parathyroid glands.

What does the Parathyroid Hormone do?

The Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) is responsible for regulating serum calcium concentration in the body. It does this by telling the digestive system to absorb more calcium when we are low, or, if we have an oversupply, instruct the kidneys to release more calcium via urine. Other functions include helping to regulate blood levels of both phosphorus and vitamin D.

What will the Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) test reveal?

PTH test results can highlight an irregularity with serum calcium levels which indicates a problem exists with the thyroid. Abnormal serum calcium level can result from any one of a number of causes including poor diet or dehydration, to more serious issues with bone health.

Irregular test results are not always cause for alarm however should always be followed up with the help of a suitably qualified medical professional. Interval testing of the hormone is often recommended for those with an abnormal PTH level.

The purple (sometimes called navy) topped K2 EDTA tube is a tube which is pre-spray-coated with K2EDTA solution and then dried for a defined period. EDTA acts as an anticoagulant, binding the calcium ions and delaying the clotting of the blood sample.
