Why use this test?

This test measures the behaviour of two hormones responsible for a range of functions. Aside from the numerous physical implications of cortisol and melatonin, they ultimately impact upon our mood, good or bad. This alone means both hormones are vital for healthy mental and physical function in the modern world. As much as the old, where our cortisol played a vital role in keeping us alert and safe.

Why test cortisol? Cortisol is great when it is working for us but not so great when it isn’t. Healthy cortisol assists with our busy daily lifestyle and also when confronting stressful situations, which we all face from time to time. Issues arise when cortisol health is compromised, which can be over or under production, or where cortisol hormone levels are elevated at the time we are attempting to sleep.

Why test Melatonin? Test results will reveal if your Melatonin production is taking place as it should be at night. Abnormal results, depending on severity, may trigger further investigation and possible treatment. Slightly low or high melatonin levels can often be corrected naturally.

I Am Taking Vitamins/Minerals. Would this Affect The Test Results?

Sustained high vitamin B12 supplementation is known to interfere with melatonin and it is advised that use of B12 is ceased 1 week prior to testing only if a 'clear result' is required. More information can be found within your test kit package.

Taking Oral Contraceptive

We are not testing reproductive hormones so taking hormonal birth control fine.

I Have An Implanted IUD, Will I Be Able To Use The TestoChecker Kit?

Yes, however, if you plan on removing the IUD, at least 1 month should pass before using the TestoChecker Kit.

Do any medicines or supplements affect the results?

Generally speaking, hormone testing is fine to do when using medicines but there are exceptions. Any supplements used to mimic the effects of hormones, and any steroid based treatment will affect the results. Information contained within your kit outlines how to 'obtain a clear result' if this is required.

Please note: We do not recommend ceasing use of any prescribed medicines without first consulting your GP.

What are the most common causes of melatonin irregularity?

Melatonin levels can be affected by as specified caffeine, alcohol, tobacco but also high vitamin B12 supplementation, stress (increased cortisol levels), irregular sleeping patterns e.g. shift work, increased exposure to light – particularly Blue Light and excessive exercise can also deplete melatonin levels.

How long does testing take?
Generally speaking testing time is up to 10 working days. For more detailed information regarding testing time see here.
